Tone Shaper is multiband compression with the configuration already done, four bands working in parallel rather than a crossover matrix to set up. Parallel operation is what preserves the fundamental character of a sound while compression adds to it, so an element can come forward without crowding everything around it. Resonant kicks, sizzling hi-hats and thin sources are the usual targets, and the band layout comes from Manny Marroquin's own settings.
