Proportional-Q, by design.
The API 550 is a proportional-Q equaliser, meaning each band narrows as you push it harder. Small moves stay broad and gentle, larger ones tighten and stay musical, which is why the curves have lasted since the late 1960s. The 550A gives three bands with five selectable frequencies each plus 50 Hz and 15 kHz filters, and the 550B four overlapping bands across wider, multi-octave ranges. Analog harmonic distortion and hiss are switchable.
