Presence without EQ.
The Aural Exciter was a 1970s Aphex unit so sought after that it was rented rather than sold, used to restore the high end that recording and playback of the era stripped away. It does not work like an EQ. Brightness comes from controlled second-harmonic distortion, which adds sheen and presence without making a track trebly, so it suits dull older recordings as well as acoustic guitars and vocals that need to open up. Waves developed it with Aphex.
