The needle, when you want it.
The VU Meter shows average level through modelled needle ballistics, which correspond to perceived loudness far better than the peak readings a DAW meter gives. Averaging out short peaks is the point, since it reveals the real dynamic character of a track rather than its momentary extremes. The difficulty in building it was mechanical rather than sonic. Headroom calibrates to your reference level, and CPU use is negligible enough to insert everywhere.
