The dbx 160 is a VCA compressor with a savagely fast attack, a clean break from the designs before it and the reason it became the sound of 70s drum and bass compression. Used conservatively it adds fullness, slammed it pumps, and both are legitimate ways to work with it. Waves developed the model with dbx and added a mix control for parallel compression, along with linked stereo, dual mono and mid/side operation.
